A proposal by Wimbledon organizers to expand the site of the Grand Slam tournament with 39 new tennis courts has been given the green light by local authorities.

The controversial proposal includes 39 new courts and will nearly triple the size of Wimbledon’s current site.

The All England Club’s proposal to build 39 new courts, including an 8,000-seat show court, on the adjacent former Wimbledon Park Golf Club was passed on Sept 27 by London’s deputy mayor for planning, Jules Pipe. Wimbledon will nearly triple the size of its current site once the project is completed.

Wimbledon championships host the All England Lawn Tennis Club was given the go-ahead for a massive expansion project by the Greater London Authority on Friday -- seemingly ending a long battle with those opposed to the radical plans.

The Greater London Authority has outlined “very significant economic benefit to the London and UK-wide economy" from the project.
