Arizona's grocery landscape could undergo significant change, as Kroger aims to buy the Albertsons and Safeway stores in the state. Who owns them now?

Kroger and Albertsons have identified 579 U.S. stores that they intend to offload from their combined grocery store count in an effort to merge.

Both companies will be offloading nearly 600 stores across the U.S. as part of its proposed $25 billion merger.

Kroger Co. has identified the 579 stores it plans to sell to C&S Wholesale Grocers in an effort to get antitrust regulators’ approval for its $24.6 billion acquisition of Albertsons Cos., including 26 in the Dallas-Fort Worth area.

Last year, C&S Wholesale Grocers agreed to purchase 413 stores and eight distribution centers that Kroger and Albertsons agreed to divest in markets where the two companies' stores overlapped. C&S said it would honor all collective bargaining agreements with workers. C&S is also set to acquire the Mariano's brand name.
