Walmart workers at a Mississauga, Ont., warehouse have cleared a key hurdle in their fight to become the retailer's first unionized depot in Canada. Unifor, Canada's largest private sector union, announced Friday that a majority of the 800 workers at the site west of Toronto had voted in favour of unionization earlier in the week.

Ontario's labor relations board is expected to decide Friday whether Walmart Canada employees at a Mississauga warehouse can vote on unionizing their workplace. A private-sector union called Unifor applied to the board on Tuesday on behalf of more than 800 workers at the Walmart distribution center.

The union says it’s Walmart’s first warehouse to unionize in Canada. Unifor national president Lana Payne says the employees stood up for their rights and the union is excited to get to work on their first collective agreement. Unifor’s campaign at Walmart’s facility began in December 2023. The vote was held from Sept. 10 to 12.
